Trip Overview

A Journey into Nepal’s Remote Western Himalayas

The Lower Dolpo Trek is a journey into one of Nepal’s most isolated and enchanting corners — a land of high passes, deep valleys, turquoise lakes, and timeless culture. Tucked away in the far-western region of Nepal, close to the Tibetan border, Lower Dolpo remains untouched by mass tourism, offering a trekking experience that feels truly wild and authentic. The trail takes you through rugged Himalayan landscapes, narrow gorges, windswept plateaus, and fertile valleys dotted with traditional villages that have preserved their Tibetan Buddhist and ancient Bon Po traditions for centuries. Life here moves at a slower pace, and every encounter — whether with a yak caravan, a monk chanting in a centuries-old monastery, or a herder tending to sheep on a high meadow — feels like stepping back in time.

The trek begins with a scenic mountain flight to Juphal, the gateway to Dolpo, and quickly immerses you into the heart of this mystical land. You will walk alongside the Bheri and Tarap Chu rivers, cross suspension bridges, and climb steadily through pine forests, grassy pastures, and rocky canyons. Villages such as Tarakot and Do Tarap reveal a unique blend of Tibetan architecture, prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and fields of buckwheat and barley thriving in the high-altitude air. One of the most memorable parts of the journey is crossing two dramatic high passes — Numa La Pass (5,190 m) and Baga La Pass (5,070 m) — where the views stretch endlessly over the snow-capped peaks of the Dhaulagiri range and the wild mountains beyond.

A highlight for many trekkers is the breathtaking Phoksundo Lake, whose deep turquoise waters mirror the surrounding cliffs and forests. The traditional village of Ringmo, perched on the lake’s edge, is home to the ancient Tshowa Gompa, a 900-year-old monastery that is both a spiritual and cultural treasure. From here, the journey gradually descends through lush forests, waterfalls, and warm, welcoming villages before returning to Juphal.

Unlike the popular trekking routes of Annapurna or Everest, Lower Dolpo offers peace, solitude, and an unfiltered connection to nature and culture. The region’s remoteness means that daily life here is still shaped by the seasons, and the people maintain traditions passed down for generations. This trek is physically demanding — with long days of walking, high altitudes, and remote camping — but the rewards are extraordinary: untouched landscapes, rich cultural encounters, and the deep satisfaction of exploring one of Nepal’s last true wilderness areas.

For trekkers who dream of venturing far beyond the beaten path, immersing themselves in centuries-old traditions, and experiencing the raw beauty of the Himalayas, the Lower Dolpo Trek with Landscape Adventure promises not just a journey, but a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that will stay with you forever.

Detailed Itinerary

Your Lower Dolpo adventure begins as you land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. A representative from Landscape Adventure meets you outside the terminal and escorts you to your hotel in the lively Thamel district. After check-in you can rest, freshen up, or explore the nearby streets, shops and cafés. In the evening you meet your trekking guide for a detailed briefing about the route, gear and safety, followed by a welcome dinner with traditional Nepali cuisine.
Spend the day discovering Kathmandu’s cultural highlights while finalizing permits and gear. You visit iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Boudhanath Stupa and Pashupatinath Temple, gaining insight into Nepal’s blend of Hindu and Buddhist traditions. In between sightseeing, your guide helps you check trekking equipment and paperwork so you are fully prepared for Dolpo.
Take a short scenic flight from Kathmandu to the lowland city of Nepalgunj near the Indian border. From the cooler Kathmandu Valley you descend to a hot, subtropical climate. After hotel check-in you can stroll through bustling bazaars, experience the Terai’s cultural mix of Nepali and Indian influences, and rest ahead of your early flight into the mountains.
Early in the morning you board a mountain flight to Juphal, a small airstrip perched above the Bheri River. After meeting the trekking crew and organizing loads, you begin a gentle introductory walk. The trail contours above terraced fields and passes small settlements as it follows the Bheri River towards Dunai, the district headquarters of Dolpa. This first day offers your initial close-up views of Dolpo’s landscapes and village life.
Leaving Dunai, you follow a scenic riverside trail along the Bheri River. The path undulates above the water, crossing suspension bridges and passing traditional villages and cultivated fields. By afternoon you reach Tarakot, once an important fortress town on the ancient salt trade route to Tibet. You can explore its alleys, old structures and surrounding farmland while interacting with local residents.
Today the trail leaves the main Bheri corridor and follows the Tarap Chu River upstream. You gradually gain altitude through pine forest, grassy meadows and scattered farming hamlets. The scenery becomes more rugged as you approach Laini Odar, a dramatic cliffside campsite with sweeping views of the valley and surrounding hills, where you spend the night in tents.
The path narrows as you enter the Tarap Gorge, where sections of trail are carved into steep rock walls above the rushing river. This remote stretch feels truly wild, with few settlements and a high chance of seeing yaks, mountain goats and other Himalayan wildlife grazing on the slopes. You continue through the canyon to reach the campsite at Nawarpani.
Emerging from the gorge, the valley opens into the broad Tarap Valley with its high-altitude fields and stone houses. The landscape becomes drier and more Tibetan in character. You trek past scattered settlements and chortens to reach Do Tarap, one of Dolpo’s most beautiful and culturally rich villages, home to both Bon Po and Buddhist monasteries and residents in traditional dress.
To acclimatize safely before crossing the high passes, you spend an extra day in Do Tarap. You explore the village lanes, visit local Bon Po and Buddhist monasteries, and learn about the unique customs, dress and beliefs of Dolpo’s inhabitants. The day is flexible, with light walks in the surrounding hills to encourage gradual adjustment to the altitude.
Leaving Do Tarap, the trail climbs steadily into increasingly open alpine terrain. Human settlements grow sparse and wide pastures dominate the landscape, where herders graze yaks and sheep. You gain height gradually and finally reach Numa La Base Camp, a high camping spot below the pass, ringed by snow-covered peaks and vast skies.
This is one of the toughest yet most rewarding days of the trek. Starting early, you ascend steadily on a zigzagging path to the top of Numa La Pass at 5,190 meters, the highest point of the journey. From the crest, expansive views stretch across the Dhaulagiri range and the wild peaks of Dolpo. After enjoying the panorama and photos, you descend carefully on the far side to reach the campsite at Pelung Tang.
Another early start takes you up towards Baga La Pass, the second major high crossing of the trek. The ascent rewards you with equally impressive vistas of rugged mountains and deep valleys. Keep an eye out for Himalayan blue sheep and other high-altitude fauna along the way. From the pass you descend to reach Dajok Tang, a pleasant green pasture used as your campsite.
Today you descend gradually through forests of pine and juniper, with the environment becoming greener as you lose altitude. By afternoon you approach Ringmo, a traditional Tibetan-style village located on a natural bench beside the turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake. Your first full views of the lake, framed by cliffs and forests, are a highlight of the trek.
Enjoy a full day to soak in the beauty and tranquility of Phoksundo Lake and its surroundings. You can hike along lakeside trails, visit the 900-year-old Tshowa Gompa monastery perched on a cliff above the water, and take time for photography and quiet reflection. The blue lake, dramatic rock walls and nearby waterfalls make this one of Nepal’s most spectacular natural settings.
Leaving Ringmo and Phoksundo behind, you descend on forested trails with glimpses of waterfalls and terraced fields. The air feels warmer and thicker as you lose height. Passing small villages and farmlands, you eventually arrive at Shyanta, a lower-elevation settlement where you stay in a local teahouse.
On your final trekking day, you follow an easy path back towards Juphal. The route offers last views of Dolpo’s hills and valleys before you arrive at the airstrip village where your walking journey officially ends. In the evening you can celebrate with your trekking crew, share memories, and prepare for the next day’s flights.
You board an early morning flight from Juphal to Nepalgunj, enjoying aerial views over the remote hills. After a short layover, you connect to a second flight back to Kathmandu. Once in the capital, you transfer to your hotel and have the rest of the day free for rest, hot showers, café visits or souvenir shopping in Thamel.
At the appropriate time, a representative will transfer you from your hotel to Tribhuvan International Airport for your outbound flight. As you depart Nepal, you carry with you lasting memories of Dolpo’s untouched landscapes, rich culture and the adventure you experienced with Landscape Adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lower Dolpo is considered a challenging trek due to its long walking days, remote location and high-altitude passes over 5,000m (Numa La and Baga La). Previous trekking experience at altitude and good physical fitness are strongly recommended. The route includes a mix of teahouse stays and camping in remote areas with limited facilities.
The best seasons are spring (April–May) and autumn (September–November). During these months, the weather is generally stable, skies are clearer for mountain views, and temperatures are more comfortable for trekking. Monsoon season brings heavier rain and flight disruptions, while winter can be extremely cold and some high sections may be snowbound.
In Kathmandu and Nepalgunj you stay in comfortable 3-star standard hotels on a twin-sharing basis. On the trek itself, accommodation is a combination of simple local teahouses in villages such as Dunai, Tarakot, Do Tarap and Ringmo, and tented camping at high or remote spots like Laini Odar, Nawarpani, Numa La Base Camp, Pelung Tang and Dajok Tang.
Flights to and from Juphal are scenic but can be affected by weather, especially during the monsoon or periods of poor visibility. Landscape Adventure builds some flexibility into the itinerary, but occasional delays or rescheduling are still possible. We recommend keeping 1–2 buffer days in your international travel plan and having flexible onward connections.
Yes. Lower Dolpo is a restricted area, so you need a Lower Dolpo Restricted Area Permit, a Shey Phoksundo National Park entry permit, and a Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card. Landscape Adventure arranges all necessary permits as part of the package; you just need to provide passport details, visa information and passport-sized photos.
During the trek you are provided with three nutritious meals a day—breakfast, lunch and dinner—often a mix of traditional Nepali dishes (such as dal bhat, soups and curries) and simple international options where available. Meals are prepared in teahouse kitchens or by our camping cook team, with a focus on hygiene, energy and using local ingredients when possible.
Comprehensive travel and medical insurance is strongly mandatory for Lower Dolpo. Your policy should specifically cover high-altitude trekking, emergency helicopter evacuation, medical treatment and trip cancellation or interruption. Proof of insurance may be requested before departure from Kathmandu.
