About Annapurna Region

The Annapurna Region is one of Nepal's most diverse and popular trekking destinations, offering an extraordinary blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and trekking variety. Dominated by the majestic Annapurna Massif, which includes Annapurna I (8,091m)—the 10th highest mountain in the world—this region features a stunning range of landscapes, from lush subtropical forests and terraced fields to alpine meadows and high-altitude desert.

Treks in the Annapurna Region cater to all levels of trekkers, from short scenic hikes to challenging multi-week adventures. Iconic routes include the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek, the Annapurna Circuit, Mardi Himal Trek, Poon Hill Trek, and Khopra Ridge Trek. Each trail offers unique views of Himalayan giants like Machapuchare (Fishtail), Dhaulagiri, Hiunchuli, and Gangapurna, along with panoramic sunrises, cascading waterfalls, and encounters with diverse ethnic communities such as Gurung, Magar, and Thakali.

The region is well-supported by a network of teahouses and lodges, making trekking both accessible and comfortable. Starting points like Pokhara, a serene lakeside city, add to the region's appeal with options for relaxation and adventure activities.

Weather & Best Time

Spring

March – May

5°C to 25°C C

The most popular trekking season. Rhododendron forests burst into bloom, skies are mostly clear, and temperatures are pleasant at all altitudes. Trail traffic peaks in April.

Summer / Monsoon

June – August

15°C to 30°C C

Heavy rainfall makes trails slippery and leeches common. Clouds often obscure mountain views. The rain-shadow areas of Upper Mustang and Manang remain drier and are still trekable.

Autumn

September – November

5°C to 22°C C

The premier trekking window. Post-monsoon air is crystal clear, delivering the best mountain visibility. October and November offer stable weather, moderate temperatures, and vibrant Dashain/Tihar festival season.

Winter

-15°C to 15°C C

Lower-altitude treks like Poon Hill and Ghandruk remain accessible, but high passes like Thorong La may close due to snow. Fewer trekkers on the trail and clear skies, but nights are bitterly cold above 3,000m.

Travel Tips

01

ACAP Permit Required

All trekkers need an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and a TIMS card. These can be obtained in Kathmandu or at the ACAP counter in Pokhara. Budget NPR 3,000 for ACAP and NPR 2,000 for TIMS.

02

Acclimatize Properly

Above 3,000m, follow the golden rule — don't increase your sleeping altitude by more than 500m per day. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and watch for symptoms of altitude sickness (headache, nausea, dizziness).

03

Pack for All Seasons

The Annapurna region spans from subtropical lowlands to arctic-like high passes. Layer your clothing and always carry a quality down jacket, rain gear, and sun protection regardless of the season.

04

Book Flights Early for Jomsom/Pokhara

Domestic flights to Pokhara and Jomsom fill up fast during peak season (Oct–Nov). Book at least 2–3 weeks in advance. Morning flights are less likely to be cancelled due to weather.

05

Stay Hydrated & Eat Well

Teahouse meals are hearty — dal bhat (lentil soup with rice) is the trekker's staple and provides excellent energy. Use water purification tablets or a SteriPEN instead of buying plastic bottles to reduce trail waste.
