Trip Overview

Tilicho Lake Trek – Trek to the World's Highest Glacial Lake in the Annapurna Region

Tucked away in the remote folds of Nepal’s Annapurna region, Tilicho Lake Trek is a breathtaking journey to one of the world’s highest lakes, resting at an altitude of 4,919 meters. Surrounded by the snow-draped giants of the Himalayas, Tilicho Lake is not just a natural wonder, but a sacred site for many, offering a blend of spiritual calm and raw alpine beauty.

Unlike the regular Annapurna Circuit, the Tilicho route takes you off the beaten path—through deep gorges, remote villages, high cliffs, and arid alpine landscapes—to the tranquil turquoise waters of Tilicho Lake. The journey rewards you with spectacular views of Annapurna II, III, IV, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak, along with rich cultural encounters with the Gurung, Thakali, and Manangi communities.

This trek is ideal for trekkers seeking adventure, altitude, and a more rugged Himalayan experience without technical climbing. After visiting Tilicho Lake, many trekkers continue over Thorong La Pass (5,416m), making this a truly high-altitude adventure.

Begin early with a scenic jeep drive along the Prithvi Highway, following the Trishuli and Marsyangdi river valleys. The long but beautiful journey passes lush hillsides, waterfalls, terraced fields and traditional villages. As you gain altitude approaching Chame (2,670m), the air becomes cooler and the first big Himalayan views appear, including Lamjung Himal and Annapurna II. Full DayOvernight StayMeals Included
The trek begins in earnest as you follow the trail through dense pine forests, narrow gorges and apple orchards. You pass the dramatic curved rock face of Paungda Danda, considered sacred by locals and known as the “Gateway Rock” of the Annapurnas. Reaching Pisang (3,300m), you are rewarded with expansive views of Annapurna II and Pisang Peak and a distinct Tibetan-influenced culture. Trek duration: 5–6 hours | Elevation: 3,300m Highlights: - Forested trails and deep river gorges - The iconic Paungda Danda rock face - First close views of Annapurna II and Pisang Peak Overnight in Pisang at a traditional teahouse.
Full DayOvernight StayMeals Included
Climb gradually towards Manang, usually taking the upper trail for more dramatic panoramas. The route passes through the ancient villages of Ghyaru and Ngawal, perched high above the valley with incredible views over the Annapurna range. The landscape becomes drier and more alpine as you near Manang (3,540m), a bustling Himalayan hub. Trek duration: 6–7 hours | Elevation: 3,540m Highlights: - Spectacular views of Annapurna III, Gangapurna and Tilicho Peak - Visits to Buddhist monasteries and Mani walls - Traditional stone houses and arid highland scenery Overnight in Manang.
Full DayOvernight StayMeals Included
Spend an extra day in Manang to help your body adjust to the altitude. Options include short hikes to Gangapurna Lake and nearby viewpoints such as Chongkor, which offer impressive views of the valley and surrounding peaks. You can also visit the Himalayan Rescue Association for an informative talk on altitude sickness and explore the village, learning about local lifestyles and yak herding. Elevation: 3,540m Highlights: - Optional hikes to Gangapurna Glacier area or Ice Lake (time and fitness dependent) - Altitude and safety briefing at the Himalayan Rescue Association - Time to rest, hydrate and prepare for higher elevations Overnight in Manang.
Full DayOvernight StayMeals Included
Leave the main Annapurna Circuit trail and branch off towards the remote Tilicho Valley. The path traverses juniper forests, open slopes and some landslide-prone sections that require careful footing. Gradually you reach the quiet settlement of Siri Kharka (4,060m), a common stop for trekkers heading to Tilicho Lake. Trek duration: 4–5 hours | Elevation: 4,060m Highlights: - Stunning views of Tilicho Peak and Tare Kang - More rugged, less-traveled trail away from the main circuit - High yak pastures and alpine vegetation Overnight in Siri Kharka at a basic lodge.
Full DayOvernight StayMeals Included
Continue through increasingly rocky terrain as the trail contours across steep hillsides and traverses narrow paths above deep gorges. The scenery becomes harsh and dramatic with minimal vegetation, emphasizing the raw power of the high Himalaya. You arrive at Tilicho Base Camp (4,150m), where you rest and prepare for the ascent to the lake. Trek duration: 5–6 hours | Elevation: 4,150m Highlights: - Narrow cliff-side trails and dramatic rock formations - Possible sightings of wild mountain goats and blue sheep - Close-up views of Tilicho Peak Overnight at Tilicho Base Camp in a basic teahouse.
Full DayOvernight StayMeals Included
Start before sunrise for the steep and sustained climb from Base Camp to Tilicho Lake (4,919m). The trail ascends gradually across scree slopes and high alpine terrain until the turquoise waters of Tilicho Lake come into view, surrounded by snow-clad peaks and glacial walls. After enjoying the serenity and taking photos, descend carefully back to Tilicho Base Camp. Trek duration: 6–7 hours round trip | Elevation: 4,919m Highlights: - Reaching one of the world’s highest glacial lakes - Spectacular reflections of surrounding peaks in the lake - Unforgettable high-altitude experience in a remote setting Overnight again at Tilicho Base Camp.
Full DayOvernight StayMeals Included
Retrace your route from Tilicho Base Camp back to Siri Kharka. The descent is easier on the lungs, allowing more time to appreciate the cliffs, ridgelines and wide views you passed on the ascent. It is also a good day to recover after the big climb to the lake. Trek duration: 4–5 hours | Elevation: 4,060m Highlights: - Final close views of Tilicho Peak - Comfortable descent through familiar highland terrain - Rest at slightly lower altitude Overnight in Siri Kharka.
Full DayOvernight StayMeals Included
Follow the trail back towards Manang, passing through Khangsar village with its old stupas, monasteries and traditional houses. Prayer flags, mani walls and views of the surrounding peaks accompany you as you rejoin the main Annapurna Circuit near Manang (3,540m). Enjoy the relative comfort and services of this larger settlement. Trek duration: 4–5 hours | Elevation: 3,540m Highlights: - Visit to culturally rich Khangsar village - Encounters with local yak herders - Return to the amenities and warmth of Manang Overnight in Manang.
Full DayOvernight StayMeals Included
Begin the longer descent from Manang back towards Chame. The route takes you through familiar forests of pine, across streams and past stone-walled villages you saw on the way up. The air grows thicker and warmer as you lose altitude, and you can celebrate your successful visit to Tilicho Lake with fellow trekkers. Trek duration: 6–7 hours | Elevation: 2,670m Highlights: - Long but rewarding descent through forested trails - Time to enjoy local teahouse hospitality - Reflection on your high-altitude journey Overnight in Chame.
Full DayOvernight StayMeals Included
After breakfast, board a private vehicle for the return drive from Chame to Kathmandu. The road follows the Marsyangdi River down to the lowlands before joining the main highway towards the capital. Along the way you may stop in small towns for meals or snacks while enjoying final views of distant Himalayan peaks. Drive duration: 9–10 hours Highlights: - Final glimpses of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges - Scenic journey through river valleys and rolling hills - Arrival back to the comforts of Kathmandu Overnight in Kathmandu at a 3-star hotel.
Full DayOvernight StayMeals Included
